We rented a car from Budget, Sydney a month back and at that time I didnt know about the toll road rules. I also forgot to select the option "Avoid Toll Roads" in the GPS. So I went in to the Harbour tunnel and the Sydney harbour bridge (Direction : Outside CBD one way) with out paying any toll. After checking websites I found that we have to call RTA and pay within 48 hrs. I didnt do anything till now. Also I read the RTA would send some notice if we didnt respond within that time. My question is in case of a rented car would the rental company forward the notice to me. I have not received any notice from them till date. Should I do something to get the details or leave it as such. Is there any charge for inquiry? If so where should I Inquire now? Thanks.

The notice takes weeks to come through. You might get an extra charge from your hire car company but it will be 5 or 6 weeks until the toll company sends out the notice.

You could ring the hire car place and find out what their policy is on the matter. I think from memory that it is the toll plus $10 processing fee for the letter.

the toll company is eway.com.au, you could see if you can avoid the fine, but I don't know if you will get far as you might need the car registration number which I don't imagine you would have remembered on a hire car.

I would suggest visiting the RTA website - or you could simply contact the car company you rented the car from and tell them this - also ask them to notify you when they receive a bill for the tolls and you will be more than happy to pay.

They will understand :)
