Depends what you're interested in. I'd stop at Sawtell, Bellingen (especially if it's a market day), Coffs Harbour, Yamba, Iluka, Byron Bay (and go out to Nimbin through the stunning hinterland), Kingscliff, Fingal, check out the Gold Coast for a laugh I guess.. and some nightlife, Straddie or Moreton Islands off Brisbane, anywhere along the Sunshine Coast (and hinterlands/Glasshouse Mountains) and Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay, Town of 1770, if you're really keen on scenery/wilderness take a big inland detour to Carnarvon Gorge, Bowen, Townsville, Airlie Beach/Whitsunday Islands, the Boulders, Mission Beach, Atherton Tablelands, you'll be in territory now that's just covered in rainforest, waterfalls, swimming holes.. From Cairns you can check out Kuranda, the Reef. If you've gone that far already you may as well keep going to the Daintree Rainforest, Port Douglas, Cape Tribulation, there's bitumen nearly all the way to Cooktown now which is a spectacular drive... last time we did it was in an old van with 3 cylinders - a camper would have no troubles.

There's Tourist Information Bureaus everywhere that have loads of free maps and more specific information, and really helpful staff.... you'd have to be the most boring person in the world to not have a great time the whole way up!

Paranella Park is a wonderful place (http://www.cairnsattractions.com/a_paronella-park.php) - just a bit south of Innisfail at Mena Creek. Bring your togs and a picnic. There never used to be a charge to visit - hope there still isn't.

Also Josephine Falls, between Innisfail and Babinda (where The Boulders are). Make sure though that you LISTEN TO THE LOCALS and don't do crazy things on the natural rock slide. Once in a while there are occasional flash floods there and that can be a little freaky. We grew up going there so believe me, be careful.

Once you get to Cairns, Mossman Gorge (north of Cairns) is beautiful are are the Atherton Tablelands, accessible via the Gillies Highway (lots and lots of corners) at Gordonvale or via the Kuranda Range if coming from the north of Cairns.

From Ingham up is the most beautiful rainforest you will ever experience. Take your time and stop at the little creeks etc. You will be thrilled you did. Safe travelling and God bless.

Townsville is a Great Place! A bit on the quiet, sleepy side but well worth the visit for a few days at least! Magnetic Island also is fairly good, if you like 'touristy' destinations but be warned:: Everything on that Island is Higher priced than the mainland. Green Island is much overlooked but worth the trip out to it. You can walk right around it in 20 minutes, it's that small, & they have glass bottom boats & snorkeling for veiwing the reef. Very pretty. When I was there, Green Island had only a small kiosk at the jetty & nothing else! I have heard it has come along in Leaps & Bounds since way back then though!! ..... Stay CLEAR of Rockhampton! It's a hole of a place, with a High Crime rate like you wouldn't believe! Gangs there are so bad these days, that even Men are afraid to go out after dark! ... Problem is though, it can be just as dangerous staying in!! ..... BEST of ALL,,,, Is What YOU Discover along the way! ,,,, Oh, If you are going up as far as Cairns, You just HAVE to go that bit further & go up into The Atherton TableLands!! Words cannot describe the beauty of this place! It's like stepping into Another World!! .... If you Don't go there after going so far, then when you get back home, check yourself into the 'Psychiatric Ward' at Sydney Hospital! ... There's gotta be something wrong with you if you go that far but don't see the very best that state has to offer! (unless it's a matter of limited time of course, but even then!!) "Have Fun".

That's one of the most beautiful trips in Australia! You'll love it! If you like national parks one of our favourites is the Barrington Tops National Park which is just a couple of hours north-west of Newcastle. Although it's not so far from 'civilisation' you feel as though you're a million miles away as it's not horribly commercialised. These's great hiking and canoeing in the area, and some spectacular camping spots.

In far-northern New South Wales there are some really cool places....great village markets and wonderful beaches. For a unique and exotic experience, a visit to the Hare Krishna ashram just out of Murwillumbah shouldn't be missed. Their vegetarian food is out of this world and if you like meditation there's a guest-house for short-term visitors.

Closer to Cairns, spend some time inland on the Atherton Tablelands between Cairns and Townsville...very beautiful and the local people are wonderful.

Other fun things to try: whitewater rafting on the Tully River, snorkling/diving on the reef, four-wheel-driving up north of Cairns. Actually...the whole east coast is gorgeous. Whatever you're into, there's so much to do.
BUNGLE!!

You could spend an age in Sydney let alone the whole East Coast. Personally I would carry on passed Cairns as there is so much to see the other side up towards Cape York, bearing in mind its 4x4 country passed Cape Tribulation. Port Douglas, Mossman fall only hour passed Cairns, forget the beach at Cairns, go passed it alltogether.

Byron Bay

Rainbow Beach

Fraser Island

Gold Coast (if you must...)

Brisbane - good night life in the Valley

Noosa

Yepoon (awesome Thai Restaurant)

Whitsundays (Avoid Airlie Beach itslef as its tacky but only gateway to islands)

Whitehaven a must...Difficult to leave

Hayman island if you can afford it

Scuba/snorkel anywhere on reef

Dingo Beach, Hideaway bay - not far from Airlie, truly awesome

Rocky and Townsville are bearable but easily missable

Magnetic Island

Avoid Cairns go passed it to a whole new world.

List can go on and on. Above all dont beak the speed limit of 100kph, tempting though it is the coast roads are littered with mobile speed traps!

Enjoy!

if u have never gone north before and u have all the time in the world, i suggest trying the tourist drives on your way. A couple of hours out of Sydney try Port stephens it is beautiful it especially Nelsons bay and Shoal Bay. Further north take the lakes way a beautiful drive ending up at Foster Tuncurry. Then about an hour north at Kew turn right and head to Laurieton a must see is middle brother mountain the best view (amazing), North Haven, Bonny Hills, Lake Cathie, and into Port Macquarie. Then Further north u have Hat head, Cresent head, South West Rocks, Then 2 hours north Coffs Harbour. All of these are on rivers or the beach and are all very beautiful. Try and see some of these u will not be disappointed. I loved the Mid North Coast so much i moved her 20yrs ago and not looked back and still havent seen all its got to offer

Have just moved to north Qld from the gold coast. Drove all the way in a hyundai excel with 2 dogs and 2 kids. Didn't really get to stop for long anywhere. Kingscliff is nice, the Sunshine Coast hinterland - Maleny, Binna burra on the gold coast. Bargara beach in Bundaberg, Definitely stop at Wallaman Falls outside Ingham (Absolutely beautiful), Castle hill, If you have kids, go to the Strand (Townsville) for the free water park, Between Townsville and Ingham there is a rest stop called the Frosty Mango, Great ice-creams, and lots of info on where to go further north. There is the big gum boot at Tully, Too many to list, there have been some wonderful suggestions already in your answers. The Marlboro stretch is long and boring, just remember to stop when you get tired, as this can be a prime spot for accidents. Drive safely, and take it all in, it will be an experience you will never forget. Watch out for crocs and jellyfish when you get there! Our beautiful Queensland coastline is the best in the world, just drive and enjoy!!

New castle is a nice place to visit and then Byron Bay.. Then a few days on Brisbane's Gold coast and a visit to the Chermside shopping complex..The biggest and most exciting in the State.. Brisbane City offers a load of fun from river cruising to Sealand and the Fortitude Valley night club strip.. Then after the city head to the Whitsundays.. A beautiful group of Islands in the tropical waters of Great Barrier reef.. The town of 1770 is a very nice place as well then on to Mission Beach and the party capital of the beaches in this part of Australia.. Then to Townsville..A nice place to stop for a few days..White water rafting, diving on a famous wreck, beautiful Magnetic Island can also be camped upon..The barge trip is cheap.. Then it is a choice to go overland or along the coast to Cairns.. Both will give you some special treats.. Lava tubes, Rain forrests, Crocodile parks, and this time of the year the weather is absolutly perfect for anything.. And when you get to Cairns.. That's another chapter in your story.. There are a million things to do from anything to everything.. And camping is cheap. Have a good one..

Depends how long you have, if time is yours, than see the lot, get a detailed map.

See as much as you can, become a member of the Youth Hostel, their you will get affordable and safe accommodation, look them up on the net they are world wide. You will also meet lots of other travelers there,I have traveled that rout, there is so much to see, the Great Barrie Reef, beaches, markets, great pubs, the islands and Cairns.

Watch out for: Watch your drinks, drink spiking still goes on.

Do not take lifts from people you do not know. Do not hick hike and do not wonder off on your own, side of the road, bush late at night.

Yes we are a friendly country but there are a few rotten eggs out there like every where, so do take care, I do not want to read about you in the newspaper, only good stuff.

Have fun and take care.

You must stop and see Josephine Falls, about an hour south of Cairns so it is sort of on your way. Not many tourists know about it but it is absolutely beautiful with a natural rock that you slide down into freezing cold water....believe me, in the heat of the tropics this is a good thing! Last time I was there it wasn't well sign posted so you will have to do a bit of research and keep your eyes open.

Also, you must do the crater lakes in the Atherton tableland. Breathtaking!

Mission Beach - turn off at Tully about an hour and a half south of Cairns. Made up of four amazing unspoit beaches with Dunk and Bedarra Islands off the coast. Absolutely to die for. Has excellent camping right on the beach. Five star van park at South Mission Beach, Middle of the road kind of park at Mission Beach itself. There used to be a park that you roughed-it at Bingil Bay and I am not sure if there is a new park at Wongaling. Best eating out at the resort at South Mission Beach (used to be called The Horizon - not sure if it has changed) and a restaurant at Wongaling called Blarneys. Most beautiful place in Australia - I think.

Assuming your staying along the coast...

Hat Head National Park

Its a tough one to find, but its the most amazing place I've been in Australia.

You get to the campsite, which is just your average little shady patch of grass, then you climb a hill at the edge...and BOOM

Its like you're in the Arabian desert, there are 10 storey high sand dunes every bit of the way between you and the horizon, on the far left, the beach and on the far right, the rainforest, but in the middle - desert.

You throw yourself off the top of one of those dunes and its the best fun you'll ever have, plus there's little patches of quicksand which are pretty fun to get stuck in. lol

To get there you take South West Rocks Road out of Kempsey, go past Smithtown, which at that point will reduce down to a tiny one lane road, you'll get close to a town called Kinchela at which point you take a right onto Hat Head NP Road, you follow that almost to the end, following signs to hat head camping groung, then, just before you go over a little bridge to the caravan park, you'll see an unmarked bitumen road to your right. Take that for about a km or two, then you'll see an unmarked dirt road on your right, take that one right to the end.

That road'll come out at a fork with a big sign infront of you, take the right hand fork and follow it to the end, then prepare to be amazed =]

Other than that though, the Gold Coast, Nimbin etc...

Sounds like a good trip! I'd certainly recommend visiting the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, take the time to see the beaches around Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Coolum & Noosa, as well as the lovely hinterland. Also, if you're able to take a day trip out from Gladstone to Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef, it's stunningly beautiful. However, take as much in as you can, it's all worth it! And you've been given plenty of other great suggestions too. I hope you enjoy your trip!

The far North coast of N.S.W. is pretty special, around Byron Bay and Broken Head etc (the eastern most point of Oz). In Queensland the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is fantastic, especially around Maleny. The Whitsunday's could be a great place to do some sailing and Island hoping. Up to you, Oz is a great place to travel in with too many things to see and experience. Have a good trip.

In Rockhampton, about halfway up the Queensland coast, make the time to go to "The Great Western Hotel". If you are there on Friday night you can watch the bulls in the ring and have a bbq. Very Central Queensland experience.

A bit further up the coast is the township of Bowen that looks a dive from the highway. If you go into the town, head toward Horseshoe Bay, the best kept secret. Idyllic beach with a caravan park right across the road. My idea of heaven on earth.

Have fun!

oh wow, what a trip. There is lots to see. I've done Sydney to Brisbane a few times, that's as far as I've gone. I think my favourite spot would have to be the Dolphin Pool at Coff's Harbour. They do a show there. and then of course there's all the stuff at Surfers' Paradise, Ripley's Believe it or Not. Loved that. There's a "small horse" stud farm too, near to the Queensland/New South border. Can't remember the name of where it is. That was amazing. oh and of course DON'T FORGET SEA WORLD!!! No, Coff's was my second favourite. SEA WORLD takes the prize! have a great time.

Paronella Park Innisfail - A Spanish Castle near Cairns

Today Paronella Park remains a unique eco-friendly experience where history and romance are seamlessly fused together. Paronella Park is a magical, unforgettable place nestled amongst heritage gardens and 13 acres of lush Australian rainforest situated on the banks of the crystal clear waters of Mena Creek, south of Innisfail. The ruins of the Spanish Castillo feature prominently on the grounds of Paronella Park, as do several other distinctive structures that were designed and built by the original owner of Paronella Park – Jose Paronella. Visitors can explore the architecturally unique ruins of the Castle and buildings of yesteryear, or wander through the lush gardens and Australian rainforest while being transported to another time and place altogether.

José Paronella arrived in Australia from Catalonia in Spain, in 1913.

For the next 11 years he worked, cutting sugar cane initially, then purchasing, improving, and reselling cane farms. In 1924 he returned to Spain and married Margarita in 1925. The trip back to Australia was their honeymoon.

José first saw this 13 acres of virgin scrub along Mena Creek. He eventually purchased it in 1929 for £120 and started to build his pleasure gardens and reception centre for the enjoyment of the public.

Make sure you stop off in byron bay for a few days. Its an awsom vibe there and lots to do and very friendly relaxed people. if you do stop in byron make sure you go to the rails pub for some live music and also the pub on the beach is good. Also there is a big prawn and a big bannana which you will drive by along the way that can be good for photo ops. you should look up national parks as well and do a day trip through some of the national parks when you get to queensland. google national parks and you should be able to find out ones that have waterfalls and swimming holes. Surfers paradise is a tourist trap but there are some good shops and clubs there but just after surfers paradise there are theam parks, White water world, movie world, dream world, wet and wild world. I think out of all of them movie world has the most up to date roller coasters. ummmm, there is also a casino in surfers paradise. just depends what you are into. have fun!!!!

I can't give you anything for along the way, but when you get into Cairns, make sure you track down the boat Falla. Falla was the best experience I had in Cairns. It's an old wooden pearl lugger which leaves from Cairns Harbour. Morning tea, lunch on board, diving straight off the boat, then over to Upolu Cay for more diving. On the way back, there was wine and crackers as we hoisted sail, turned off the engines and cruised it back in. My best day ever!

Wicked Campers (on the net) cheap, all incusive, and a well know sight in Aus. They also allow small 'dinks' free of charge. Too expensive to but and then sell, the loss you would make plus cost of insurance would be more than the hire. All you need is you full UK driving licence. You are not permitted to drive them 'off road', but with only a month you will have no time to explore the bush with everything else there is to see You will love it!
Guy

On the right (that's the drivers side) you should see lots of blue ocean.

On the left you should see wide open spaces - green and brown landscapes.

If you see ocean on the passenger side - turn around cos you're probably going the wrong way and you'll just end up in Sydney again.

Occasionally you'll see buildings on both sides - That's OK - just keep going in the same direction - you'll soon pass them and it will all be back to normal.

When you get near Innisfail stop to see Paronella Park at Mena Creek - Awesome.

I did Victoria to North QLD roatrip last year. I visited many things, highlights were definately Rockhampton, seeing lookouts from top of mountain, such a gorgeous charming city, the architecture of buildings there are popular.

Visit the Billabong, just south of Townsville. My absolute favourite was Wallaman Falls, it's the steepest waterfall in QLD, not far inland but you need permitting weather conditions....I made it up fine in a little hyundai. All the best with that!

P.S. Mackay and islands are of course pretty brilliant!

How old are you? If you're 18-26, I just went up the coast and we stopped for 3 days at a place called South Mole Island, its a resort on its own island in the Whitsunday's. Most fun I have EVER had. Either way, sail the Whitsunday's....they are incredible. Fraser Island was beautiful, Airlie Beach is fun, and Cairns is a life of its own :) you will have so much fun no matter what you do, good luck!

Out side Brisbane and Gold Coast you have to see Airlie Beach, Whitsunday and Magnetic Island. Innisfail, Hinchinbrook Island, The Boulders at Babinda. I have live in Cairns for 14 years and I am still in awe of the place everything is just beautiful. But you have to see Palm Cove, Port Douglas and Atherton Tablelands. Enjoy your trip and be safe.

Hi, I was nearly not going to answer, because everyone has told you heaps of stuff, but one of my all time favourite places has not been mentioned. It is Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. You can go there and drive up the inland road from Lithgow one way in your camper, through Mudgee and the wine regions. The caves are one of the wonders of the world. Have a wonderful time!

About 25km north of Rockhampton is Capricorn Caves. And at Ayr is a Gem Museum. And drop in for a yummylicious ice cream at the Frosty Mango in far north Qld. Please see Paronella Park voted number one on the must see and do things in Qld to mark 150 years. And go white water rafting down the Tully River.

Whatever you do, don't miss out on Eungella National Park, west of Mackay. That is, if you are into nature and wildlife, it is absolute bliss. One of the few places you can see a platypus in the wild. And the view of a night-time from the top of the mountain is staggering.

Yes Byron Bay and Ballina are nice to discover. Gold Coast is a hoot with all the theme parks. Go to Ashmore road steak and seafood for a good feed. Cant Miss bundaberg if you like rum at the factory

I agree with most of the other answers with the addition of a visit to Mt Warning and the Border Ranges in Northern NSW.

Mt Tambourine is worth a visit too.

Also Hinchinbrook Island is magnificent. Do the 4 day walk if you have time.

Carnavon Gorge is another place to visit but you would also need a few days.

I study the route on the map to see which towns I might pass then google those towns to find local attractions. Sometimes I have to call local councils and usually they ask you the dates you will be in their town. That way I could plan my trip and budget. I don't have a pile of cash for leisure sitting around. Most of them tied up in property investments.

Rockhampton to Townsville is a bit boring to drive. Magnetic Island at Townsville is fun as is Airlie Beach. If you enjoy clubbing and good food, Flinders and Palmer streets in Townsville are great. The Strand at Townsville. Castle Hill in Townsville has some great views. Saturday night markets in Cairns has some cool stuff. You'll regret coming back to NSW, I certainly do!

Fingal Head for sure, it has a caravan park on the beach and the most majestic headland with views to Cook Island (which Captain cook named) plus views to Point Danger and Kingscliff. Takes a long time for people to leave.

I recommend at least two or three days on the Gold coast. My favourite is the Broadbeach area. Depending on your age and budget, accommodation can vary from caravan parks, backpackers lodgings to motels and hotels.

Enjoy your trip

I lived in that area for many years and recommend you see Yamba, Bangalow, & Rainbow beach. The surrounding areas are beautiful too. Be safe - careful of the 1960's roads :)

Whether your a "Stoner" or not NIMBIN is a great place to see at least once in your life and is a far better alternative to "Byron Bay"! Byron is so crowded and commercial now it;s sad! Parking is almost impossible to get and the parking Inspectors are ruthless!

Drop in to Newcastle to see the Knight's supporters frolicking in the surf at Nobby's beach then laying on the sand like walruses.

I have started a tour of the Newcastle beaches as they are becoming more wide-spread & if u are lucky u might see their mating ritual.

Woolgoolga....It's between Coffs Harbour and Grafton. A little coastal town that has great beaches and nice weather this time of year. It's only a small town but as they say "It's a hard name to say but a great place to stay!" :-)

Stay in Sydney!!!!! we have 2 million Mexican Sydneyites up here now we want to get rid of.We are supposed to be retards up here but half of Sydney has chosen to migrate here to be a part of this great state.
