If it's mined anywhere in quantity, it's reasonably safe to safe to say that it's mined in Australia. Iron ore, coal, bauxite, uranium, silver, gold, lead, zinc, nickel, diamonds etc etc etc, they're all mined here in huge quantities - this is an incredibly mineral rich country. The pay is usually excellent, but that's mainly because this is a huge country and the mines are hundreds, if not thousands of kilometres away from a decent sized city and good pay is necessary to attract good workers.

EDIT:

The pay depends on the mine, its location, your skills, how many days you work at a stretch, whether it's FIFO or near a town etc etc. We hear of figures between 100k and more than 200k but that's as close an estimate you be able to get on here. You can be pretty well guaranteed though that there won't be much to spend your money on except booze - most mines are in very remote locations.

There is a serious shortage of miners here, and we mine pretty much everything. The only things I can think of we don't mine much are some gemstones. We are the world's leading exporter of coal, iron ore and zinc, and the second largest exporter of gold and uranium. There is good money to be made, but keep in mind that the mines are nearly all in remote desert areas and so the lifestyle isn't glamorous.

While the pay is good the living conditions are completely different to the UK. Since the mines are all more than 1000km from any major city you will be away from most of the amenities that you are familiar with. E.g. If you are at Mt Isa you are more than a days away from a department store, you could be as far away from a cinema. So you have to order all that sort of thing by mail.

Well mate , you're in luck ! Australia's economy is based on what we did out of the ground so you can take your pick....literally ! lol

Our biggest ones are coal most of which is open cut , iron ore & bauxite...scattered across the states but the main ones are in Western Australia & Queensland ..of course they are a way from the coast but the conditions for workers are really good & miners are among the highest paid in the country..

Pretty much everthing: gold, coal, diamonds, sapphires, antimony, iron ore, uranium, rutile, bauxite, oil/gas, zinc, that's off the top of my head. The mining industry is a bit up and down at the moment... I think as a rule though the pay's pretty good, even better if you're in a remote area. Not sure of the specifics though.
