The country is Australia, and the official language is English. Australia was colonised by Great Britain in 1788, which is why we speak English. We are now an independent country.

Some words in Australian are very different from British English in that they can have an Aboriginal influence, or from other cultures.

We moved to Australia from the UK in July 2007 and some of the words we didn't know were:

Bludger - a lazy person

Manchester - bed linen

I've still got no idea why bed linen is called Manchester in Australia.

Like most English-speaking nations we have our own variation of English. Australian English. Just like the Unites States have American English, etc.

When the British first colonised Australia they brought English with them.

Yes and no.

English is the official language here. However, since we are multicultural, you are bound to come across people who can speak more than English itself!

Sigh. How come the US talks english? They're a long way from England.

How come half of Canada and many pacific islands speaks french? They're a long way from France.

How come half of South America speaks Spanish or Portuegese? They're a long way. . . .

Aww. Forget it.

(copy and paste!) The English language in Australia is distinguished. Australian English is a bit different from other countries that use English as an everyday speech. Australians have their own styles and characters in using the language, vocabulary, pronunciation and accent. In addition, they have their own slang words when they speak in their groups, and women and men also have their language as well. Though Australians speak English, they have their own special words and phrases called strine. Australian Strine consists of words and phrases which have different meanings from other English (like American or British English). It also consists of words that the Australians have either made up theirselves, or they have borrowed from Aborigine words or from slang used by early settlers
