The Harbourview hotel in North Sydney has excellent views, is close to transport and the food is pretty good. Smaller rooms aren't too expensive at all (considering this is a 4 star hotel too) and you still get a bath.

For a more luxurious but still affordable experience I recommend the Rydges hotel on Jamison Street. Skyscraper views but the rooms and food is excellent.

If you've got cash to splash then go for either the Observatory Hotel in the rocks (great rooms but also an excellent indoor swimming pool and sauna) or the Park Hyatt, which will cost a bomb but give you up-close views of the Opera House, Harbour and Harbour Bridge - plus it's got a pool and spa on the roof that no-one seems to use even though it's bloody great up there.

There are many hotels in Sydney. Many of them are great but I'm not sure if you are looking for 4 or 5 start hotels.

www.tripadvisor.com has a great bunch of hotels that have been rated by fellow travellers - this might help

If you have money..the Shangri-la, or the Four Seasons...both are 4 star..the Shangri-la could even be 5 star by now.

For a more affordable 4 star experience, try the Vibe Hotel in Goulburn st. It is close to public transport for most parts of the city, train, bus, monorail, and within walking distance to many places of interest.
